I can see a few characters in my novels and novellas cooking with purple cabbage.

I see Sujay Pushan from Peach Pie Brings Snow cooking cabbage.  She is practical, most of the time, and she loves practical vegetables on her kitchen counter.  Zinnia also from Peach Pie is interested in cabbage.

Who else do I see dishing up cabbage to perfection?

There are a few characters from Magic Soup and Purple Juice. They like to pick up their cabbages from the cabbage patch like people pick their apples from orchards.

Who else do I see making a dish with purple cabbage?

Well, of course, Mrs. Bear from Cranberry Moon Empire.  She is quite a character, and she could do some wonders with purple cabbage. She does like the color purple.

The colors red and green, too. You get the gist.

Now, each of those will put her or his spin on this purple leaf. Got that bud?

Sujay will shred her cabbage, and add a spoon of mayonnaise, mustard, rice vinegar and salt to her cabbage and make a quick coleslaw to eat with her fried chicken. She also makes stir fry with her cabbage.

Zinnia will use her cabbage as a placeholder for lettuce.

The characters from Magic Soup and Purple Juice will boil their cabbage.

Mrs. Bear, she will use maple syrup when she is out of honey, and she would not touch the cabbage if there were no nuts or dried fruits in her cupboard.

To celebrate

Today, as a celebration for our Cranberry Moon Empire App release, I am going to make Mrs. Bear’s version. I decided to go with Mrs. Bear’s vegetarian purple cabbage coleslaw.

Approximate Steps

Get the small head of cabbage.  Here I used half of a small cabbage.

Shred cabbage, and toss it in a salad bowl where you have to room to mix.

Now, Mrs. Bear doesn’t measure anything when she cooks, similar to Sujay.  However, Sujay will measure dishes that she hasn’t made yet.  Not Mrs. Bear.

She just says, “Sprinkle salts, spices, and sweets for flavor. Add a dash of cream if you desire dry, or add a heap if you desire wet. Then for substance, toss dried fruits and nuts straight into the dish.”

Going by her measurement, I am not sure how this side dish will turn out. But here we go.

1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar

2 teaspoons of honey

Honey for purple cabbage coleslaw

Add a heaping of your favorite mayonnaise

Adding 1.5 tablespoons of vegetarian mayonnaise

Add 1 tablespoon of almonds

Add a tablespoon of dried fruit.

Sprinkling raisins

Mix all that goodness up with a sturdy spoon.

Add more tang, sweet, or salt based on your taste.

Chill it in the fridge for a minimum of thirty minutes, especially on a hot day.  Today, the temperature here is 81 degrees.  It’s going to be in the fridge, and I want to cool it for 2 hours, but I am getting hungry, so I am not going to chill this.  The cabbage was in the fridge, so it felt chilled to my fingers when I chopped it up.  The mayonnaise was and is still cold.

A sample taste tells me,  this vegetarian purple cabbage coleslaw is reasonably chilled enough.

What to serve this quick side dish with?

Tell you the truth; I am enjoying every bite of this. Like Mrs. Bear says, I taste the sprinkle of sweets, and the dash of tang, and the deliciousness of the whole humble cabbage, but I am not supposed to stop here. I am following Mrs. Bear’s dinner instructions.

And yes, for the main dish, Mrs. Bear will serve herself some good tamales.   She didn’t prepare this herself.  This lady has no time for that now.  She has things to take care of in the Cranberry Moon Empire, but she always has time to cook one small side dish.  Yea, just a little plate because she is busy rolling in unbelievable messes.

Some day, I will have to get around to the homemade tamales. Some day, later, maybe.

Today, I am with Mrs. Bear, and move away someday because let me try these vegan tamales.
